Thanks for the comments. These are very rare visitors to Northern Europe, including Britain, but they are commoner in the Mediterranean area, it's one of the most widely distributed butterflies in the world, I can't remember it's exact range but I think it covers North America, most of Africa and Australia, and probably elsewhere as well. Paul, I guess that the butterfly had a problem during pupation or when it was emerging that caused the folded wing?
