A species of Tenebrionid Beetle. They inhabit slipfaces and interdune valleys on the sheltered side of dunes where windblown detritus accumulates.

That's very distinctive - these detrivorous tenebrionids of warm climates have a shared appearance although I wouldn't like to say what it was ....

Are these long legs to act as stilts over hot surfaces? I wonder if there's some mimicry in its body form: could easily be taken for a spider! How big is it?

Hi Paul, it was probably around 1.5inches wide including legs. There are c.200 different kinds of Tenebrionid beetles in Namibia. I can believe your theory about the legs acting as stilts over the hot sand. The tok-tokkies I've seen have always moved at a fair old lick running across the sand.
