I did a day of dry stone walling years ago whilst at an outward bound centre nr Ullswater. Definitely a skilled job finding the right stone to fit your gap. Aren't there different styles of dry stone walls around the UK?

Yes, it's quite variable even within Derbyshire and Yorkshire. To an extend depends upon the nature of the rock - this used a sandstone which seems to split easily into quite narrow blocks whereas our Yorkshire ones made of millstone grit come in various sizes.



The Chesterfield ones look neater but they're not too difficult to knock over and the top layer seems especially weak. Our ones are basically big lumps of millstone with any gaps filled by smaller pieces.
