Afraid I'm not going to be much help but the grub looks dipteran (?) how big was it (roughly)?

The grubs were about 3mm or 4mm long. More than a dozen of them came out of the hole.

Don't know how you'd check this out. Do you have a national Horticultural Society? They usually have someone good at insects!
