You're well ahead of northern England in the flowering stakes. Anemones have been in flower for a couple of weeks but the wood garlic hardly in leaf - must go out and have a look today - as soon as the sleet stops .....

At the time I didn't realise this was a member of the allium family - or until now called wood garlic, but all is starting to make sense. When I was looking for a nice example to photograph, I got a bit nervy as I thought someone I couldn't see was close by eating a burger or something with fried onions! These flowers (as it turned out and not a stalker) had such a pungent oniony smell.

Indeed, and can be used in cooking. Was a regular ingredient of stews in days past! A lovely and useful plant .... throw some in with your mushrooms ....
