Many of the larger butterflies seem very lethargic, if not dead. None with wings open - is this Papilio memnon?

I think that it is an owl butterfly - Caligo eurilochus. I have just checked on the photo I took at HB of the sign and it said they have a 2 month life span, they come from central and South America and the caterpillar food plant is Canna or banana.

Were there many pupae in the nursery area? This is usually full of pupae and emerging butterflies. I saw eggs among the plants when I was there and it all looked to be in tip top condition and as it should be, how sad you saw it like that.

It was only that species that seemed to be suffering. There was not a great deal of life in there - I suspect that they deliberately run down population levels in the dark part of the year.
