Met this dragonfly walking along a mountain road on Cabo Ogono, Basque Country, August 2007.



With the help of the excellent WestPalOdos group had it identified to this species but there was much interest in its sex! Some said female but one well-supported idea was that its was a gynandromorph - hermaphroditic because the back end looks neither male nor female! Just my luck to pick a weirdy ...

Nice shot, and what a strange insect! To me the appendages look more male than female (although they don't look right for either!) and the body shape looks more like a female to me.

I think I was looking at the same species in France (although I'm not certain I got the id right) here are a couple comparison shots:

Yes, nothing ambivalent about your pictures .... if I'd known about this possibility then I would have taken more interest and photographed in more detail ... ho hum.
