Caught in the moth trap last year, I've always liked this group of spectacular moths!

One of the commonest Hawkmoths.

What great looking moths these are!

I've never seen one of these so I was wondering if they are more common to certain parts of the country or if I've just been unlucky so far.

It's a lovely photo too!

Thanks Suzanne. These are probably my favourite of all moths. They're probably a bit commoner in the southern Britain, but I think they're found throughout England and Wales, with smaller numbers in Scotland. I think that you'd be quite lucky to just come across one of these as they're normally well hidden during the day. A few ways you might be able to see them are:

Watching honeysuckle after dark with a torch in June and July, I've seen a few like this.

Finding one of their distinctive caterpillars and raising it through the winter.

Or, going along to any local moth trapping events in your area, there are usually a few being run in the summer months.

Thanks for the info Guy.

I quite fancy going to a moth trapping event as I have no hope of finding anything on my own, so I'll keep a look out for some dates later in the year!
