Where does the name "cave of the witches" come from - there must be a story there somewhere?

Isn't it the commonplace way to attribute something 'magical' to caves (unless, in England, it's a "Robin Hood's Cave"!) - and perhaps that is where the witches hung out. In Staffordshire there's a Lud's Cave which wasn't used by witches (to the best of my knowledge) but was used by a protestant christian sect being persecuted by the Roman Catholic church of that time .....

I've uploaded a picture of 'Lud's Church' which, incidentally has nothing whatsoever to do with Ned Ludd ....

Aha, it all seems to go back to 1610 when the area was visited by the Inquisition. Need I say more? There are lot of French sites on this: maybe this translation will come through?

.... well, sort of. Fancy being accused of 'scavenging' ..... [checking the French, that is 'necrophage' in the original!]
