Mmm .. were there lots of these and were they definitely feeding on the plants? That sounds like the larvae of either weevils or of leaf-beetles (Chrysomelidae) both of which have rather fat, stubby larvae without very well developed legs: e.g. http://www.coopext.colostate.edu/TRA.../blakvine.html
Whereas this one has 'raptorial legs' and big jaws, looking more like a ground beetle (Carabidae) or rove beetle (Staphylinidae). Not enough detail really and there are other options ....

Well i think this is the culprit as i have found one or two when i have dug under to see the roots, they seem to eat from under so the plant eventually dies, i have seen simular much bigger whiter ones, saying that someone has also been feasting on my leaves!!!

What size was this? The weevils don't usually get larger than 1cm (if that) - if it's larger and actively moving then it's more likely to a be a predatory beetle which *may* actually be searching for and eating the larva or whatever other pest is doing the damage to the plant!
I recall (twice) sitting watching people digging (one of the few pleasures of life!) an picking out larvae and squishing them. When asked why, I have been told, both times, that it's vine weevil. In neither case was it weevil but beneficial ground/rove beetles ..... just a precautionary note ....

Its about 2cm long and very active, hard to take a photo as it moved so much, the roots are rapidly being eaten away and its only the Garaniums they eat!! thank goodness because it could of wiped the garden out.
