Pancratium maritimum

In the absence of a plant gallery, I've added pictures of P. maritimum, the sea daffodil or sea lily to personal gallery.
This is a beautiful plant growing up almost naked out of the sand and flowering at the hottest time of the year. I've only seen it around Greece and Turkey but I believe it's found all round the Mediterranean? Anywhere else?

Answering my own question here! On south facing cliffs of the island of Houat, Britanny in August:
http://www.wildabouttheworld.com/gal...500&ppuser=152 which looked much like Pancratium maritimum. Couldn't get closer, I'm not a great climber. But searching the web it does seem to be the same 'Mediterranean' species:

It is a beautiful plant!

It is also found at a few sites along Bulgaria's Black Sea coast to the south of Sozopol, in particular near the mouth of the river Ropotamo, the Kavatsite locality, Cape Maslen Nos and between Ahtopol and Rezovo. Unfortunately these sites are threatened by the development of new resort complexes.

In Bulgaria it is a Red Data Book species and it is called "Pyasuchna Liliya" which means "Sea Liliy.

Smile

It's quite widespread then.
Sorry to hear about the threats to these places - that's one of the difficulties with holidays: everyone wants a holiday but not enough places for them to visit, apparently.
I notice your wildlife holiday website: sounds good and should get more publicity but I don't suppose you're allowed to advertise here?

And I've recently seen it in northern Spain, up hills and well away from the sea .... perhaps it's spreading?
