December 1952!
We tend to think that pollution and the weather is a modern day problem. But in the begining of December 1952 at least 4,000 people died in a week, from breathing difficulties, during a severe London smog!

Yes, I remember it ( ) - it wasn't just London but most of NW Europe. If you look in the papers of the time you'll see people saying we can't do anything about it, pollution is an unavoidable by-product of industrialisation and urbanisation .... sounds familiar? But, of course, it was possible to stop it quite easily - the knowledge and the technology was there so it just needed political will ...
