Where are the best places in the world to go whale watching? Either to see lots of whales, rare whales or a large variety of different whales?

The most whales I have seen were in Antarctica where I saw both Humpback Whale & Sei Whale. It is quite amazing to be out on the sea in a tiny zodiac with these giants in the water near you.

In a place called Benalmadena on the Costa Del Sol, Spain there's a Marina with quite a few dolphin/whale watching boats. I've been on one trip and we saw a few whales (just our luck there had been a big pod earlier that morning but it moved on by the time we got there!

) , but even if you don't see exactly what you're looking for there were of sea birds and odd stuff like flying fish to watch

I would recommend Hermanus in South Africa (not too far from Cape Town). We saw Southern Right Whales there (mother and baby) and they were really close to the shore.

You are also likely to see humpback whales in Maui (Hawaiian Islands) if you go at the right time. We saw a few from a distance - not as close a Hermanus, though.

I have posted some pictures of the Southern Right Whales I saw at Hermanus on my first trip to South Africa. The second time I went, I did not see one whale!! The advantage, however, of whale watching in Hermanus and the surrounding areas is that you can see the whales from the shore. On my first trip, way, way in the distance, I also saw an Orca while we were watching the Southern Rights at the shore.

I am lucky enough to have a daughter living in Maui, Hawaii. The whale watches there are fantastic, especially if you go with a group called the Pacific Whale Foundation. They educate you about the marine environment while you head out to look for whales and dolphins. My daughter's birthday was last week so I 'adopted' a dolphin for her - she is thrilled. It is a pale coloured dolphin and so has the name Popo Hau (which I am reliably informed is Hawaiian for Snow Ball).
Just need to save up enough to visit again and go and see if we can spot Popo!
