naturalist photography
How did you first get into naturalist photography? Did you start out taking photographs of buildings, people, cars, sports etc and then discovered the natural world, or did you start taking photographs after having an interest in wildlife?

Back in about 1979 I decided I was going to be a wildlife photographer. I knew very little about wildlife, not a lot about photography, but I had managed to take some pretty good pictures of horses, cattle, dogs, and cats. So i could photograph animals, but didn't want anything to do with people (eg owners). So, where was I going to do this wildlife photography? Well, you find wildlife on reserves don't you? And what exactly was I going to photograph? Well, there were field guides so that you could identify things.
But, eventually, I became a wildlife photographer, though just not full time. The rest of the time I do other wildlife things.

I started nature photography - particularly in flower photography back in 1999 and gradually move to other subjects such as landscape and wildlife in 2000 when I was attached to a wetland park. Having seen the impressive photographs of digiscoping taken by Laurence Poh, I stepped into digiscoping as well. With the introduction of the more affordable DSLR in 2004, I focused more on birds as my main subject for photography.

I only got my digital camera in April 2006. Our trusty old film one gave up the ghost after 17 years of photographing our kids from being babies, the milestones, holidays, Christmases and birthdays. It was never used for wildlife or landscape.
When I got the digital one, I had planned on taking some photographs to record bird and butterfly species in the garden, which I had made "wildlife freindly" just for my own record. I never realised I would get hooked on photographing and recording every plant and insect in the garden or I would discover how wonderful and beautiful moths are. I ended up with lots of photos of the garden and decided to make a website to show everything I had attracted through planting for wildlife. My Wildlife Friendly Garden
Now I rarely go anywhere with out my little point and shoot Canon. I love to take photos of The Lake District in England, and allsorts of trees, flowers and wildlife here in Holland when I am out. Actually, taking photographs, has made me alot more aware of what is around me, and knowledgeable, through wanting to ID and find out more about what I have photographed.
