Bigma vs Nikon

You'all seem to be going for Bigma lenses, rather than the more expensive Nikon.
Apart from price is there any REAL difference??
And - I've been recommended a Nikkor 70_300mm for birds with a N D80 would you
go along with that?

Don't expect any advice from me! I've never been entirely sure what a Bigma is - a large Sigma zoom, I think. Perhaps someone will clarify for me.

I've used Nikon professionally but never been able to afford one personally () but have always worked on the assumption that, if you want the best - get Nikon. However, lots of people get superb pictures with other set-ups so will be interested to hear of comparisons.

Thanks, I wasn't perhaps very clear. Bigma make lenses that fit on Nikon SLRs. They seem to do a similar job as Nikon lens equivalents at about half the price. Are they as good?

Nikon is way better than Bigma. I know that Nikon is expensive but the lenses are better in quality.
