Train and road travel

Continuing my investigations of non-plane travel over the world ....
There used to be some reasonable ("good" has never really been the term - 'slow but sure' better?) rail routes through the middle east - from Turkey to Egypt and eastwards to Iran. Does anyone know if any of these function nowadays?

The Man in Seat 61 is phlegmatic - How to travel by train from London to Tehran & Iran - but has anyone tried going to Iran lately (or Egypt, or points further east?)?
