I could have absolutely kicked myself when I disturbed 2 buzzards which were on the ground not far from the path I was walking today. I had a look to see if I could find any pellets but I found a dead hare which they had been eating! It wasn't in a terrible state or where the buzzards had been eating wasn't a large area so must have died very recently. Would the buzzards have actually killed something so large or would it have died of natural causes? I got a piccie but don't like to post it in the gallery.
I waited for them to come back but they didn't. I saw them disappear into seperate trees but I just could spot them, I expect they could see me well enough though. The hare wasn't where I had seen hares before so it is good to know they are not just in the one place.
I also saw more piles of deer hair from moulting, thats quite a few in recent weeks.
Everything still seems very bare and the canal had refrozen - it seems like spring will never arrive!
I had a look at The Mammal Society's e-bulletin for February on line and can't see the article you wrote, am I looking in the wrong place for it or hasn't it been published yet?
No you are not imagining it, I really have gone quiet on WAB. It was deliberate, and I have involved myself with other things and not looked back! But I agree with you, this is a nice little retreat, especially as I have always enjoyed sharing views with the wider world. Of course, some on WAB objected to even venturing across the channel when it came to discussions, let alone anywhere else! But as France is virtually spitting distance for me, I don't feel quite so alienated as perhaps those in the frozen north do (haha!) Has your snow melted yet???
No the black woodpeckers are further south in the AWD Amsterdamse Waterleiding Duinen - we have a season ticket and get there as often as poss'. We keep an eye out but haven't seen any yet just the GSW there.
I will have a look for scats - any pictures so I know what I am looking for?
Where is that - never heard of it?
I have seen a pine marten once in the NP-I am convinced of it and have been back several times looking but only found squirrels.
waarnemings.nl are an organisation which collates sightings which P4B is a great advocate of, that is a national database.
Most of the stuff I find about the NP is how grazing is helping with wildflowers etc. I will have to look in to it all. There is a visitors centre alot further away than where I get to on my bike - I will have to get Andrew to take me some when. We went a few years back and there were alot of pamphlets and info.
Sorry - I was meaning my book about the NPZK, it is tawneys mentioned there and not barn owls. I have been on to Pudding4brains to see if there is a place I can find listings of species of flora and fauna for the NP, he doesn't live anywhere near by but knows these sort of things.
Have a nice rest of the weekend!
I have just seen your brilliant photo of last nights moon! I tried and tried to get a decent piccie with my poor pathetic little camera but the moon was a blur although Mars turned out surprisingly well! It was such a fantastic clear night too and then I was driven in by painful hail.
I took Andrew out to the NP thismorning we had more snow over night so I thought I would show him my new snow print skills! I think he was impressed!
BTW it is Tawny owls mentioned in the book.
