Hairball
I found these this morning there were two. I think they are hairballs of some type, possibly from fallow deer, there was deer poo very close by, but is the colour right for fallow deer?
There was just wiry hair in the 'ball' and the hair looks to be flat, especially the black hair. There was nothing apart from hair as far as I could tell and it was not matted. 4-5cm long.
Thoughts please .

I've just had a look at the photo on the "big boys" monitor ( 80cm!). The hair is ( almost) definitely deer but I'd expect it to be more matted if it was a hair ball. The shape, particularly the way it tapers out on the left hand side, looks more like it is the remains of Fox poo, with the poo weathered away. What deer hair is doing passing through a Fox, unless it was from a dead animal that had been scavenged, I can't imagine.

I have seen plenty of fox poo and this was nothing like, even if the biodegradeable stuff had weathered away. I am sure it was really fresh, and there was fresh deer poo close by. I pulled one bit apart and there was nothing there apart from hair and a bit of straw .
There again you mention you think it would be more matted, when our cat has a hairball it is matted and very wet and not nice at all, this was dry apart from a little surface dew which hadn't soaked through. Uummm - something else to ponder over
