Caterpillar in a Rose
Hi,
I got no idea what Caterpillar this is. Can anyone help me ID it?
Photo taken in September of 2009 and it's eating a Rose on this picture.
Location is semi desert like area in southern Spain.
Thanks,
Mats

Hi and Welcome!
I think your caterpillar is a Helicoverpa armigera- Scarce Bordered Straw.
Could I ask that next time you post an image you do it here in the Wild about the World gallery and not WAB, you do it exactly the same way but your image will stay with your post. It will also go into the main gallery where more people will see it and there is more chance of a reply. We love images from all over the world - that is why we are here .
I do like your avatar, we have a cat just like that - very easy to spot in the snow .

Thanks you very much.
It sure looks like that's it. Funny how happy one can get just to find the right ID for a species
About posting:
I tried finding info on how to post and spent a long time on that, about 45 minutes, to get it right. In the end, when you post a new thread (or even a reply) it says right there "Images must be posted from the Wild About Britain Gallery or Image Archive." Then there is a link "Click here" for more more information and doing that takes you to a non existing page.
It's not very easy to get it right in WAB or WAW even if you're meticulous like me and try reading all the relevant info.
So now, should I NOT follow what it says here or is the information just very unclear and the admins/mods need to change the info and text?
My cat is what keeps me sane in this insane human dominated world I hope you have as much need and love for yours. They give so much.

Sorry you had so much problem uploading your image - I don't understand why it says up load from WAB, I think someone else mentioned it once. All I can think of is when the pages and links were made the passage must have been copied and pasted from WAB without realizing the error. I hope this link helps and you haven't been put off from posting in future.

Glad to been of help with the ID, catterpillars can be very hard to ID as they go through 4 stage's of larva life known as instars, at each stage they can change appearance dramatically, websites and book's often only show a catterpillar at one stage so the correct ID is so easy to dismiss.
Our cat is 12 years old in human years and slowing down a bit, she was a right terror in her younger days - very lovable though .

Thanks !
Btw, my cat is 12 years old too, but according to the vets in a very young shape
Hopefully she lives many years more. Record (wondering though) is 36 years for a cat.

Yes, this isn't the first time that someone's been confused.
Stu ... are you there?
It shouldn't take very much work to alter those few words ....
... and welcome Mats!

Welcome on my part too
To the casual observer it would seem that the system on WATW started from a carbon copy of the WAB-software and some skeletons remain. There are indeed reverences to WAB on numerous dialogs, sometimes even linked.
One other cumbersome item is that the search option that is implemented in the gallery (to find forum threads referencing the image) doesn't work for WATW, as far as I can detect also due to a WAB naming convention programmed in.
The search issue and some of the dialog issues have been brought to the attention of the forces that be, but it seems there is little point in continuing to do so (find & notify of more dialogs that need fixing) as even the ones known for a few years now don't get fixed. Low priority it would seem, but all the same confusing for new users
Cheers, Arp
P.S. @Mats: It may be a good idea to re-upload the image here as it will probably get deleted on WAB before too long - foreign images not allowed.
