Winter weevil

I haven't seen any insects for what seems like ages but today I saw quite a lot of these weevils (I think that is what they are?).They were walking on top of thick snow and as I was trying to photograph one it started to burrow in to it.
I wonder what they were doing on top of the snow, surley what they eat is under it?

... or above it? Could they have bored their way out of branches perhaps? Otherwise they would have been boring up trough the snow ....
Very interesting. The long rostrum should make it possible to pin this down to genus or such ....

Howdy,

Interesting find I keep looking in/on the snow to find a Boreus some day, but this is nice and peculiar too I have no explanation really, especially not if these occurred in numbers. Maybe the warm november made them develop/hatch prematurely?

Habitus seems to suggest something Dorytomus-ish I'd say, but then again, I don't do beetles so ...

Cheers, Arp
