I took this picture of a Garden carpet - Xanthorhoe fluctuata the other evening. It was stationary when I spotted it and for ages afterwards. I didn't think it was a garden carpet when I saw it because of the resting postion of the wings being held up like that - usually they are totally flat on what ever the are resting. When I looked at the pictures though, it looks as if something has just been deposited! First came the excitement of a moth laying eggs in the garden, then I thought surely they would lay eggs on a plant? The more I looked I decided I dont think it is quite egg shape (though I have never seen moth eggs in real life), do you think it is moth frass then?
Question 1. Moth eggs or poo?
Question 2. Do moths lay eggs on things other than plants?
Question 3. How many eggs at a time do moths lay?
