Moth ID, please
This certainly looked like a moth, but behaved more like a butterfly, pumping its wings in the sun, but preferred being upside-down! Any help greatly appreciated.

Yes indeed a day flying moth.
It is a Mother Shipton - Callistege mi.
An interesting English name - look at the pattern on the wings-it resembles a old ladies face which is said to look like Mother Shipton (Ursula Southeil 1488 - 1561), who lived in Yorkshire (UK) and was a prophetess.

The Latin name looks interesting as well - pithy, if nothing else.
I didn't know that Old Mother Shipton has a moth named after her.
I quite often go close by Knaresborough and keep telling myself that a visit might be interesting ... one day. I gather that Ma Shipton is the centre of local tourism.

Thanks both of you, quickly done. Was in my book but it didn't fit what I could see.
