Larvae and Pupae ID please
Hi Folks,
I found the larva wrapped in a rolled up leaf with silk in it, when the larvae dropped, it had the silk as a life line, I decided to put the little guy in a bug jar and kept emptying the poo and puting fresh leaves in every other day,
Now, I had a look today and there is no more droppings in the jar so I had a look in the leaf, I carefully unwrapped it and it is now in the pupae stage,
I'm hoping it matures soon, I'll keep you all posted on what emerges, complete with a pic of course,
I think Goosey is doing likewise with hers,
Duncan
Found in my garden in Kent UK

Yep exciting isn't it - I am doing the same (did you hear someone shout ... "get a life" ?). This will be my first if all goes well. Mine pupated a week ago and I only started caring for it since then, so haven't had anything to do apart from check for mites and and change - so far so good.
How large is your pupa Duncan? It is totally different to mine in colour and appearance.
What plant was it on?
Did the larva in image 1, look like that before it pupated, or undergo another instar?

Hi again,
I measured the pupa at 22 mm ,
The plant/bush that it was on I don't know the name of, but it should have deep blue ball type flowers covering it (my one doesn't have flowers yet) and they were also found on the wisteria,
The pics 1 & 2 are of the same larva which has since turned into the pupa in pic 3 , like you I can't wait to see what emerges,
Duncan

Could your plant be a Ceanothus Sp?
How long does it actually take for a larva to turn into a pupa? Hours -days, I have never observed it.
I have a weird larva on the ivy I think could be pupating but don't want to bring it in incase it isn't but it doesn't look "normal" and I have never seen it or any larva that look like it before.

Check out holly blue larvae, they can feed on ivy and look weird.
I think Duncans is another tortrix.
