Painful Insect Sting

What has the most painful insect sting? Is there any particular insect that has a sting that's a lot more painful than others?

I usually find bee stings and midges an itchy irritation rather than painful, but ants seem to really pack quite a punch.

Not really looking to get stung by anything...I wondered what insects it probably be best to avoid

Stu

Personally I'd say the horsefly is the worst individual bite, especially in the longer term rather than the immediate nip. On the other hand I was in Norway a couple of weeks ago, and I was outside unprotected for about five minutes one warm evening, and got bitten more than thirty times by black flies, like midges only bigger, and both my legs and arms were on fire for about three days.

I'd say use deet and stop worrying...

I think that's probably the worst insect sting/bite I've ever had too. As a kid we used to go to an outdoor swimming pool where on really bad days you could get stung half a dozen times and they used to leave huge red marks that itched for weeks.

I was told once that horsefly bites can cause a virus infection in some people, and it used to be called Summer Flu. I've never seen that confirmed though.
