Eggs ID please.
Can anyone Id these eggs for me please?
This photo was taken yesterday but I first spotted them on 29th June.
They are quite tiny which makes them hard to measure but the whole area was approx. 9mm x 4mm.
Thanks

I would think they are Heteropteran, some form of true bug, from the orderly arrangement and shape. But some other orders lay eggs like this as well. The only way to find out is to let something emerge!

Hi All,
Yes, egg shape and such could be Heteropteran, it's just that it's a tad too many eggs for that (in my limited experience). Could it maybe be Lepidopteran? Seen those in comparable quantities (and more) quite often...
But I really don't know ... just guestimating ... like Paul says, try to go back at some point (soon) and see what hatched
Cheers, Arp

Thanks Paul and Arp.
I wasn't sure what these were and was quite surpised to see them on the side of a plastic trough, so it will be interesting to see what does finally emerge from them.
They were a darker brown this evening so I imagine it won't be too long now before they show themselves......I just hope that I will be around at the right time to see it!

Thanks H Dogg.
I have just ventured outside to have one last look at the eggs tonight and this was happening!
Apologies for the blurry photo (I don't generally do night time shots!) but I thought I'd better get at least one in case they had dispersed by morning and I missed my chance.
Is it possible to tell what they might be from this shot?
Thanks .

I think I can safely say, what you have there is Larvae .
They must have gone off to eat some where, I wouldn't have thought they were too far. Perhaps they hatch at night to ridisk chance of being predated?
It was fortunate you checked them when you did, I had some eggs that started to hatch one evening last summer and by the next morning there was no sign they had ever existed!

Well they're certainly not bugs - so moths or, just maybe, sawfly? They probably won't have gone very far - just on to something that they can eat ....

Thanks for the help Goosey and Paul.
They were still there this morning but I didn't want to take the chance that they would do a moonlight flit and I would never have known what they were, so thought a dark, blurry photo was better than none at all.
Anyway they have all gone now but I haven't a clue where......probably just away from me and my camera no doubt!
At least I'll know what sort of eggs they are next time.
Thank all!

Right Goosey.
I've just been out (as per instructions! ) but unfortunately couldn't see any of the originals.
However, I did find these about 3 inches up from where the others were......don't know how I missed them first time round but a nice surprise nevertheless!
Will that do?

Good work! I bet they are your "originals" they change so fast .
I hope you have plenty for them to eat - there seems an awful lot .
Actually I have just had another look - do they lift their tail- end right up when you disturb them? If so they could be sawfly larvae. but they usually don't cluster like that and spread them selves around the edge of the leaves

Ooops, I thought they were different ones for some reason.
What do they eat?
And no they didn't move when I disturbed them, but a few did a bungee jump off the edge !

They will eat what they are on - strip it probably with that many . Their mother will have laid her eggs on a suitable food plant, don't worry you won't have to run out to M+S for something special for them for tea .
