Bad year for butterflies

I read in the paper last week , that here in Holland it has been the worst year ever since records for butterflies. Numbers are down by at least 50% on all species because of last summers bad weather.
I have mentioned my own lack of sightings on gallery comments, but until then I didn't realise it was a national trend. Midway through June and I haven't even seen a Red Admiral this year, and even the whites have been few and far between. The most numerous species I have seen have been specled woods and a few skippers.
So what is the situation else where?

Hi Goosey, in the UK butterflies suffered their worst year in 2007 for over a quarter of a century. I think its having a definite knock-on effect this year because of their inability to breed last year because of the heavy rains. I've seen far fewer species than normal, no Red Admirals or Small Tortoiseshells at all yet! Although seeing some specialist species like Northern Brown Argus has made up for it.

good news for now at least

The summer flying butterflies are starting to come out now here in Holland and the news seems to be more positive than for the spring flying ones. As it is only the beginning of the summer flight season, there aren't any national figures known, but the signs seem to be good. Even the most endangered species have already been spotted and the Large Skipper has never been seen in as large a numbers as the past week! So lets hope for more news like that on the butterfly front...
