Elephant Beetle!
A beetle the size of a hamster has been found at a banana packing factory in London after surviving a journey from Costa Rica. Nice news link - he's looking for a mate...

I've heard of small beetles being imported in fruit but not one that size! I suppose bananas are good because invertebrates can hide in the middle of the bunch?
Could be worse though: could be genetically engineered: Help us hunt down the Superlambananas - Liverpool Daily Post

Indeed. The artist Taro Chiezo was making a comment about the dangers of genetic engineering if I remember, Liverpool being involved in the trade of lambs and import of bananas. I must admit I am quite fond of the original Superlambanana but all these others springing up all over the place is a bit OTT. I suppose it is quite nice with the school kids and community projects being involved in the new designs. I remember Manchester having a similar thing with multicoloured cows roaming the streets a few years back.

Hi all,
Thanks for the original link Black - good reading; impressive beast
I guess the many-multi-coloured-statues-of-some-sort has been a real hype all over europe (world?) for the past decade or so. Not sure where it started, but I think it was cows indeed ... Many towns/areas seem to have cows anyway. Hamburg has "Hummel-Hummel" watercariers all over the place , I'll dig up a snapshot if I can find one.
Cheers, Arp
P.S. Seem to have "archived" mine rather un-orderly But here's one by someone else ...

I think Milton Keynes started it all with their concrete cows:
BBC - Beds Herts and Bucks - In Pictures - Milton Keynes concrete cows
I saw a more colourful variation in the Basque country last year:
In the grounds of an orphanage - I don't know what the children thought of them .....
