Ice shelf loss

Quite startling in Canada - BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Major ice-shelf loss for Canada - but happening elsewhere, of course.

rubber duck alert!

To moniter Greenlands Jakobhavn glacier, NASA has dropped rubber ducks into it. They hope it will help in their queste to understand why glaciers become faster during the summer months as they slip into the sea. It is also hoped that it will shed light on the melting mechanisms and how the melting water will influence the Gulf Stream and thus the European climate.
The ducks have a probe and an email address on them, so anybody who finds one of these on the beach can contact NASA about finding the duck.

The idea for using rubber ducks in such a way was first thought of in 1992, when 30000 of them washed up after falling of a cargo ship. Ever since they have been used to learn about the oceans' currents.

The Jakobshavn Glacier is incidently thought to be the 'mother glacier' of the one that sunk the Titanic. It is also responisble for 7% of the ice flowing from Greenland.

The Jakobshavn Glacier must have been massive, its terrible how these glaciers are melting at such an alarming rate.

I like the idea of the ducks being used to monitor the flow. I can imagine a few happy faces when the ducks are found on beaches until the realisation sets in what it actually means and the waters will be rising where you are standing an living!

1000 things to do with a plastic duck, part 257! Nice one.

On the general topic, it seems that this is not going to be a record year for Arctic ice-cap melting - not quite as bad as last year. So, I suppose, that's almost good news?

I heard on the radio this morning about this story and the fact that none of the ducks have been found! Where have they all gone, a complete mystery .

Stolen by the polar bears?

It's not just the Arctic glaciers that are melting, of course: there won't be any in Europe soon:
BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Swiss glaciers 'in full retreat'

Hi all, global warming is a serious issue and a burning example of environmental problems. We all should do something for that. Such kind of threads increase awareness among people. Good job!

The North-West Passage is now open, for whales, at least:
BBC News - Whales take Northwest Passage as Arctic sea-ice melts
Quicker than was expected?

Probably nothing to do with climate change but a big chunk of ice to go floating over the southern seas!
BBC News - Huge iceberg forms in Antarctica
