Environmental impact assessments
Good to see that, at last, African countries are taking account of potential environmental damage during 'development'.

Just hope that it will be more effective, or consistent, than in Europe. Are there such signs of hope in other continents?

This is indeed good news if everyone envolved can come to an agreement on all the issues. These things tend to get watered down, with personal interest playing the trump card. Lets hope that these African nations will learn by the mistakes that the Americans, Asians and Europeans have already made, and seem so slow at putting right!

One problem impinges on others. Near Chesterfield are lots of landfill sites. Apparently no one had considered what would happen if they were flooded. When the River Rother gained an extra three-four metres depth this summer it took some of the landfill with it, depositing much of the plastic in nearby trees and shrubs. So what used to be a pleasant little walk is now an alley of plastic bags and the like which will undoubtedly still be there in several years time. (This was far from the worst polluted stretch but my battery ran out at this point .... ).
Plastic bags are actually causing more serious problems in other countries - blocking up drainage and water systems in Bangladesh, for instance. Sensibly they've been banned in Dhaka: Movemement
