Odd pepperpot

I found a group of 9 Pepperpot's - Myriostoma coliforme actually they just jumped out at me (in a manner of speaking ) they were so big and bright, and I saw them from quite a distance up a steep enbankment. Of course I went to investigate and they were about 9cm tall, when I lifted one to put it in a better place for a piccie I really had to stretch my fingers around the circumfrence to hold it.
Anyway there was this odd looking one among them with a white head and no holes, the age of the arm bits don't look particularly immature and certainly no younger to the others - just an odd looking Pepperpot!

and how they usually look

They are great aren't they .
If you are anywhere near the coast there in Bordeaux you maybe lucky enough to find them in sandy and hilly areas, very often where there is hawthorn. They are a winter fungus but unlike most fungi they (and other earthstar type) tend to hang around for months, even a year just slowly ageing so you can spot them almost anytime of year in some state or other. The biggest problem is in the summer there is too much undergrowth which hides them unless they are in the open.
Their powdery spores (gleba) are in the top of the pepperpot and are dispersed by the wind or being kicked by passing feet, so chances are once you find a patch you won't have to look far the next year.
I hope you find some and experience the same joy I did when seeing my first .
