Britrail
Hello there, I’ve just come back from a 6 month trip around Europe, feeling very cultured now. Anyway, this post is just to recommend the experience – HIGHLY! I know it’s the fashion for students to jet off to South America or Asia for their gap year but I really think we young ones are missing something right in front of our noses – Europe! It’s so much easier to plan, you can see a lot more because the travels so much cheaper (I got myself a Brit Rail Pass), you don’t have to work yourself into the ground for 9 months to be able to afford 3 months away from the rain and at least you’ve got a bit more of a chance for integrating with the culture…Anyway, just a thought. Anyone thinking of a short notice gap year, I’d say Europe all the way!

Lorian, you will have to tell us more about your travels through Europe. Did you just intend to "travel" as much as possible and see as many country's or did you have a plan of action and "must see's?"
My daughter is a bit of a culture, history and achiatecture buff and when she is off, has a list of museums and chuches she has to visit. She is off to Italy next year, Sicily in particular, she has done Classical Rome. Any hints on Italy?

Will agree that there's so very much to see in Europe and that one of the Eurail passes is a very good investment - however the url given is in USDollars and not available from Europe! Better look at: Eurail - Official Website for all Eurail Passes
Rail travel, especially in Western Europe is becoming very fast and, with judicious ticket-buying, can be inexpensive. It's also, of course, practically carbon neutral so without the massive pollution of 'plane flights.
As I often recommend - my favourite travel site is the non-profitmaking:
The Man in Seat Sixty-One... everything you need to know, and a lot you don't ....

Would welcome any more.
