Breton beetle
There were lots of this beetle on plants at the alignments in Carnac last summer - getting on for 1cm long. Look quite distinctive but I've been unable to come up with anything. Any suggestions?

Interesting looking beetle, looks like it could give a good bite if it had to!
The elytra look quite strange, it looks like they are too short for the wings although it may just be patterning?

No the elytra are definitely short - which should be a clue in itself! Yes, the jaws look very efficient!
