Top Ten Places to Visit in Africa

What are your top ten favourite places in Africa that you have either visited or would like to visit? Your top 10 should only include wildlife/rural/natural places like forests, canyons, beaches, mountain ranges, valleys, lakes etc and not the cities or urban areas. It'll be great to hear everyone's ideas so get posting...if you can only think of a few, add them in and come back to add some more to your list when you've thought of them

This is an amazing place where you are able to drive yourself around, although you must stay on the tarmac roads and ensure that you are in a camp by sundown. I went there on my 2nd visit to South Africa in August 2002. I have posted some pictures that I took there. They are not superb quality as digital photography has advanced a great deal in the past 4 years. As much as I would love to go back, a new house and a new mortgage mean that it remains a dream.

We visited Penang last year, and really enjoyed the feeling of being up close and personal with lots of nature. Monkeys played in nearby trees as we breakfasted,
we saw an enormous hornets nest as we travelled on the funicular railway up Penang Hill, huge jelly fish swam in the warm coastal waters, and lizards scuttled into undergrowth as we passed. Fortunately, we were not in the area of Jalan Paya Terubong when they found a 5.4m long king cobra! I'd have set a new record for the 100m dash.

In the 1950s my ship berthed in Capetown and after scrounging a day off I went for a walk up to the top of Devils Mountain, then down to the woods below Table Mountain, behind the Govenors house, then back to my ship.
To get to Devils Mountain I went through "District 6" not knowing it was taboo for a white man to go through there, thats another story. Devils Mountain was so exciting and alien to me, the plants, birds and snakes etcetra enthralled me and have stuck in my mind all my life. If you've been an adventurer like me, you will have many unforgetable memories, this was one of them.

Unfortunately I only visited in the dry season, and it was stunning then! The area around is rather touristy, but this would be a fantastic family destination with all the adventure sports stuff going on as well as the falls & associated national park. I'd also recommend the sunset cruises-although probably best to avoid the one where they claim if you drink the bar dry you get your money back.

All the amenities you mentioned are present in Tanzania. The eastern part has a great coast region, on the northern part you will find the tallestb mountain in africa. Wildlife such as serengeti and ngorongoro are very famous. Great place to be in to see a totally different part of the world.

Brilliant for hiking and nature walks some of my fondest childhood memories surround those places. (Not that it was that long ago ) Drakensberg is the better in my opinon and there is some great accommodation round about the area. Its known for its trout fishing spots.
