The National Trust has just produced a report -
BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Water policy 'failing to deliver' -
saying that in UK, at least, we're not doing enough to prevent problems with our rivers: taking very short-sighted, local actions when we need to be thinking about 'source to sea' plans.
Is it different in other parts of the world?

Water conservation is a big issue and considering many parts of the world are facing a water shortage there is more stress on the rivers. Until consumers become conscious of their consumption patterns and begin conserving water, change will be distant.

BeWaterWise has some great tips on how to save water at home, in the garden, in the office etc - for details visit Water Saving Tips

Rvers and lakes have long suffered pollution from farming but the effects are now being seen in the oceans. On the Breton coast algal blooms caused by overuse of nitrogenous fertilisers on nearby farmlands.
BBC News - France: Wild boars dead amid algae on Brittany coast
Sad if people and other animals will no longer be able to use the beaches ....

Difficult to do as much as is needed for rivers if there's no agreement on which are most polluted?
