Polluted buffalo milk
The waste dumping in Italy is also affecting the food chain; Mozzarella farming is at the centre of a food scare involving the pollution caused by the waste dumping. Apparently buffalo milk in Campania has been contaminated with high levels of dioxins, caused by illegally burning of toxic industry waste. The connection between the waste dumping and the contaminated milk hasn't been scientifficly proved, but it is generally thought to be logical: the buffaloes are grazing on areas were it is known that toxic waste has been dumped over the past few years. 30% of the herd in Campania have been infected with the contagious bacterial disease brucellosis. The Italian gouvernment has been stressing that the cheese is safe, but sales have already dropped by 50% in Italy alone...
