Hummingbird hawk-moths (Macroglossum stellatarum) have thwarted me this year. I have seen them three times in the garden and no photo

.
The first time was the beginning of July, I was just about to go on holiday and looked out the window and there was one in the Eupatorium - my camera was packed! by the time I got it and ran out there I couldn't find it

.
The second time I had just spent ages trying to rescue a Peacock butterfly from the shed - I finally caught it came out with it in a jar ready to release and there was a HBHM in the lobelia - there I was hands full and no camera - it got away

.
Today - this very morning at 7.40am I went outside to feed the birds, it was just light enough to see what I was doing and there was one again in the lobelia! Fancy seeing one this early in the day and this time of year - I was astounded. Although they are day flying moths, they can't need to warm up their wings like a butterfly to get going.
Anyway after another sad tale it was 3rd time unlucky
