Music of the World
I suppose that music is another think that has lost much diversity - anywhere on the world you can find symphony orchestras or pop bands all playing much the same thing ... so it's nice to encounter something unusual: I liked this hurdy gurdy player in Brittany:
I know black has seen some strange musicians and instruments - anyone else?

The missus and I were in Jamaica 3 years ago and saw a street band , couple of guitars and a guy with an oblong box about 2 foot long with metal plates sticking out with little paddles on each which he struck with his thumb to produce a sound, it's a home made instrument and has a range of about 8 notes/sounds,
Don't know what it called though, and I dont have any pics, sorry
anybody know of it,?

Sounds like a plucked idiophone (and, no, I had no idea what that meant until five minutes ago ):
Idiophone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I've seen thumb pianos although they are usually quite small but they seem to be subject to all sorts of variation:
Mbira - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anything like?
Sounds interesting whatever .....

The oddest instrument I've seen was a goat - or the external remains of one used as a sort of bagpipes although it was a whole adult goat, almost as big as the player.
Takes me back to when we were staying in a hut on the coast of Chios (Greece) and eating in the local taverna. One evening our dinner turned into a wedding feast with the goat-player and various other instrumentalists. We became guests of honour - the first and last time I danced like Zorba!

I've always been worried by the name Flageolet, I know it's a flute of sorts, but somehow the word conjures a picture of someone called Denise the Dom.
Sorry, just thought I'd share that with you.
Jaws Harp is a weird instrument. Who thought that one up?

I'd stay off the beans then!
Don't know anything about the origin of the jaws harp - there are some very strange instruments about ....

Yep, that's another reason to avoid the Flageolet. Well, 'tis a wind instrument!

Through your thread Paul, I have since found out that the instrument I saw was called a Marimbula, used arround the Caribean islands, and belongs to the Lamellaphone group of musical instruments

I might mention that South London has a collection of musical instruments at the Horniman:
Horniman Museum collections
Was more of a look and read collection when I last visited but very interesting and pretty comprehensive.

The oldest instruments found to date seem to have been flute-like:
BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | 'Oldest musical instrument' found
I would have expected drums or other percussion instruments - perhaps not yet discovered?

Here's a new way of looking at DNA:
BBC News - Choir to sing the 'code of life'
I've heard some of it and it is rather beautiful; not sure how much relationship it has to the genome though!
