Parsnip smell
Over the last 10 days or so I have noticed a distinct raw parsnip smell when I am riding through a woodland area. Some places it is really powerful, then it has gone and then as I reach somewhere else I can smell it again. Can anyone tell me what it is that I am actually smelling?

Would there be masses of wild parsnips like there are Ramsons - Allium ursinum in woodland in the spring, these give off a very pungent oniony/garlic smell in the area. Surely parsnips only smell when they are harvested? Not that I know . Are they a woodland plant? I suppose they must have been at one time.

Well,the wild parsnip is described in my book as 'pungent', so could quite well be.
