musky books

I have recently be given some beautiful and quite upto date reference books which will come in so handy. They are not aged or discoloured, but they have such a musky smell which gets up my nose and starts me sneezing - after a while I feel so sick I cant look at them any longer.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of the smell?

OOPS - I must be the only person that says musky .

They are useful tips thanks -I will try the baking soda idea, and let you know .

What a difference. I checked the books after one week - I couldn't wait any longer (I am the most impatient person I know). I had put the offending books in a carrier bag with baking soda and seeled it. There is a huge difference already, so I have re-done them, with fresh soda and bags, I think that in another week I will hardly notice any smell .

That's a good tip for future reference.
Although you have to wonder how people find these things out!
