What's your most common local bird?
In the UK I guess it's probably the Chaffinch, but in my area of Cheshire the most common local bird is probably the Starling. 40-50 of them whenever I look out of the window, and hundreds during August and September when they come and take berries from the nearby trees.
So what's your most common local bird? Given that this is going out to people around the world, the results should be fairly interesting.  |

Aah the American Robin, we had a very rare visit from one over here in the UK 2 or 3 years ago, people came from all over the country to see it, unfortunatly a Sparrow hawk got it, oh well that's nature. |

House sparrows are most common in my garden-40+ at present.

In my garden it is the Blue Tits, I counted 20 juveniles on my feeders the other day. |

It used to be Sparrows and Starlings over here in Grimsby NE lincolnshire UK
but over the last few years there has been a startling reduction in their numbers, I would say I see more Blackbirds than anything now. (even though they are territorial)

Hi Stuart, I'me a Cheshireman too, well I was until they changed the Wirral to Merseyside. Unlike yourself I do not have any Starlings at my feeding station. The most frequent bird is the Goldfinch whose here every day throughout the year. After travelling around the country, the most frequent bird seen is, I think, the Wood Pigeon.

Is your house sparrow the same as the European one? (Have been caught out before by European and American robins being totally different animals!). |

They could be the same as the European ones as they do look very similar

Good illustrations there - what we need to do is find if the scientific name of yours is Passer domesticus! House sparrow - The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
I think, when we're dealing with species across the globe, then it's best to include the proper, scientific names of species - so many are different between Europe and the Americas (beavers, robins, to name only the first two that I can bring to mind  )
So, is your red fox different from ours? They are very intelligent animals but sometimes I think they're becoming too urbanised - commonly see them walking down the street of a morning, merely crossing the road if someone approaches ... not a cat to be seen when they're passing by!

I think that our House Sparrows were introduced into America so they are the same species. The same happened with Starlings which are now a real nuisance there apparently because they take native birds nest holes.

That was my recollection - although I think that the first and major colonisation was on the Atlantic so I'm quite interested to hear of them in Texas - a much warmer and drier area?
Red Fox may not realise that the house sparrow seems to be in decline in most of its old habitats in Britain. So very interesting, encouraging, to think that it's doing well elsewhere!

I have just had a look through my records of birds seen in and around my village in Bulgaria, and come up with the following data:
Top 10 Most Regularly Seen Resident Birds
1. Chaffinch

In my South Yorkshire garden then the blue and great tits (used to be Parus caeruleus and P. major but names have been changed lately  ) are in a par but this is very variable from locality to locality - the nuthatch is common here (possibly my fifth most observed species) simply because I live next to woodland.
I don't remember the national figures but there has certainly been a decline in some species - the house sparrow and the starling especially.

I've only once seen a mocking bird and that was in Berlin Zoo - quite amazing things - and easy to see how they got their name! Never seen a blue jay though .... wonder if they ever fly over to Europe?

in New Zealand, Auckland, the most common bird i see around is the Black bird. its quite a bit bigger than a robin (don't get them over here) but it hops in the same way |

The most common bird in my area - apart from Herring gulls (we are on the North Sea coast), seem to be Great Tits and sparrows. |

The Blackbird was introduced into Newzealand and Australia by a group of thoughtless, homesick people who tried to turn the countries into another Britain and in doing so have almost destroyed the native species of these countries.
