A new BBC Castaway series set on and island off New Zealand is due to start on Friday. It's similar to the Castaway that the BBC filmed on Taransay a few years ago, so it's reality TV, but not in the gameshow format of Big Brother, Survivor etc.

Castaway will run for thirteen weeks and should be available for viewing on the BBC worldwide site.

Excellent I wondered if/when BBC's Castaway would return, the last one was great.

Apparently New Zealand has been chosen for the new castaway “to take the Castaways even further from their current lives”.

Although I wonder if it might be a bit more like big brother as the BBC has said that “Fans of the previous series will recognise it, but we’ve got a few twists and surprises up our sleeve.”

Often wondered what has happened to the original castaways after the first series. Ben Fogles has certainly done well, but I can't think of any others in the spotlight since 2000.

Oh dear, I didn't like it much. It's got a Channel 4 format, even has the flashy transitions between the host talking and getting back to the camp, and I didn't think it had much content at all.

I've often thought these gameshows just play on the fact that some contestants are incredibly confrontational and in some cases mentally unstable. Some of the other 'reality TV' have simply been freak shows where the public and media get to mock people who probably need help. I hope the beeb isn't about to do the same. Are we going to be presented with 3 months of shouting, fights and tears...if so, it's no different to Eastenders.
