What snake was it?
Recently I was in the Algarve when a bright green snake slithered past me and took refuge in a nearby tree.
It was bright green, about a metre long, no apparent markings that I could see and it was very fast.
It was early afternoon and very hot, we were in a lush holiday camp, lots of greenery and landscaped gardens with soft grass.
I've looked in books and various websites for green tree snakes in Portugal / Iberia but still haven't managed to find out what kind of snake it is that I saw there.

Hi Digestive, I have no idea about your snake - adders and slow worms are about my limit!
Paul M might know, he has been to Portugal and Spain recently and knows alot bout the flora and fauna there, but I don't recall seeing snakes among his images.
Anyway - welcome and I hope to see more of you here. Good luck with the ID .

Afraid not - my experience of snakes is negligible. Still. I'm sure someone else will know something!
Yes, welcome, Digestive. Did you see any other interesting things in the Algarve. I have a thread rambling on about Portugal but didn't get to the Algarve!

There are no native bright green European snakes, Green species in the Algarve region are the ladder snake Elaphe scalaris, the Grass Snake Natrix natrix and Montpellier snake (can sometimes be quite green) Malpolon monspessulanus. Other species are brown or grey and wouldnt be confused as being bright green.
