Asian House Gecko and moths

I posted this pic yesterday and frostfire asked a question about so thought I'd put the reply here...

Asian House Geckos are native to South East Asia but have been introduced inadvertently to Australia where they are now established in Queensland and Northern Territory. They are mostly found around towns and cities. You could take a photo like this any night - they are always hanging around the outside lamps and windows. They will have a go at decent sized moths too - here is a shot of one with a larger main course it found on the curtains.

Good pictures Oz!
I saw something a few weeks back on television (David Attenborough's Life in cold blood), about Geckos living in Bangkok (I think) doing exactly the same, staking out moths from the top of lamp posts.
You say they have been introduced inadvertantly, I take it they are causing no problems (except to the poor old moths ) or you would have said.
You certainly do have some brilliant and amazingly draught tolerant reptiles in Australia.

Hi goosey, they are a bit of a pest and have displaced some native geckos from built up / populated areas. They are dependent on human settlement, so not such a problem in the bush. Some people like having them around the house - they certainly keep the cockroach and other insect numbers down, and their call is a familiar summer sound. Others dislike them because they leave a bit of a mess - especially if there are large numbers of them around.

Love the second picture as well, the photo's really show their 'lifestyle'!
What strange little creatures really and it isn't often that you hear that something is dependant on human settlement. Do they differ much from your native geckos?

lol, yeah. Geckos are very nice, keeps the fly population down. In the South (I also used to live there) anoles would appear climbing up and down the porches. It was fun putting half their body in the shade and the other half in the light, you have a pied lizard! Hey ozwildlife, if ya got too many, you can send a few geckos my way!
