Travel without plane to and in Africa

I'm looking up the options for travel without airplane through the various continents.
Both "ends" of Africa - Egypt ( Welcome to Egyptian Rail Roads ) and South Africa ( Train travel in South Africa | Cape Town-Johannesburg from Ј32/$58 with sleeper ) have good or transport systems but in between it all looks very iffy!
I recall that Michael Palin did Africa from north to south but I don't recall his route. ANybody remember?

Not sure about Michael Palin's route, but apparently there is a very long road stretching from Northern North America right down to Southern South America, it must take a very long time by car but it would be amazing scenery and wildlife I'd imagine.
Guy

Edit: just thought, that's still almost certainly going to involve plane travel for anyone living anywhere other than the USA, although I suppose you could take a cruise!

Well, the Americas are another problem - need to start an appropriate thread. This is the biggest problem with non-air transport - that it takes so much time! Certainly not in Europe, quite the opposite, but travelling from Europe to Africa, East Asia or the Americas (or any combination ) does add several days to your journey. Okay for the young (gap year students) or the older (retired) or just the stinking rich but is a problem for 'normal' people!

The answer may be to stay within your own locality and watch distant places on fildm?
