Trip Summary Report: Bird Photography Exploration to Fraser's Hill, Ipoh & Penang

For the past 5 days, we have covered almost 1,400km from Rawang -
Fraser?s Hill - Ipoh - Penang. We wanted to see the red-headed trogon
so much after meeting up with a Swedish birder who mentioned that he
saw 1 trogon at the trail head of Rompin?s Trail (25/2/2007) and 4
sightings of trogon the next day, but luck was not on our side. Then,
a British couple (and also Durai), informed us of a pair of
Red-bearded Bee-Eater but again we can?t see them on that particular
location. We drove along Telekom Loop on the 2nd day and found another
birder from Indiana. He said he saw 1 long-tailed broadbill, and again
we miss that one. I parked the car a few meters in front and while we
were chatting, a bird appeared and perched right in front of us.
Looking through my camera lens, I realised it is the bee-eater we are
looking for.

Arrived in Ipoh for a quick late lunch, we met up with Cheang Kum
Seng, a veteran professional photographer and digiscoper. He showed me
the spots in Kinta Nature Park, and I was fortunate enought to see a
LIFER - blue-eared kingfisher. There were numerous black-and-red
broadbill?s nest along the road. We also saw a green-billed malkoha
fledgling together with an adult malkoha. We were about to leave the
park when suddenly we heard kingfisher?s calling. From my previous
observation, I have not seen 2 stork-billed kingfisher perching close
and facing each other. There is not much of action except calls made
by the kingfishers.

In Penang, we travelled to 2 rice fields on different days. It was an
enjoyable trip to the fields, as we get to see some birdlife that came
as a surprise.
