I think I can safely say, what you have there is Larvae
.
They must have gone off to eat some where, I wouldn't have thought they were too far. Perhaps they hatch at night to ridisk chance of being predated?
It was fortunate you checked them when you did, I had some eggs that started to hatch one evening last summer and by the next morning there was no sign they had ever existed!
