Some years ago I was leading a trek through the Jebl Sarhro Mountains in Morocco and I had a brief glimpse of a pair of Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) come soaring over the peak above me. I would love another chance to watch these majestic birds and in particular long for they day that they become re-established (or reintroduced perhaps) into the Rhodope (Rodopi) Mountains where I spend most of my time. Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) and Eurasian Black Vulture (Aegypius monachus) all breed in the Rhodope (Rodopi) Mountains but sadly the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) has been lost as a breeding species in the region. There seems to be one solitary individual that roams the region, perhaps the surviving member of the pair which until some years ago inhabited the Greek part of these mountains. It would be wonderful to have them back and so complete the full set of European vultures in the Rhodope (Rodopi) Mountains once again.
