Timber ...

This always amuses me: the spire of Chesterfield parish church - was constructed with poorly cured hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) and as the wood dried it twisted the spire.
Hornbeam is one of the hardest of temperate timbers and the beams actually ring like metal.
